Piracy threat continues to rise

 

Piracy incidents have decreased slightly in 2024, but violence against crews has surged, particularly in Indonesia. From January to September, the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) reported 111 hostages, 11 kidnappings, and 45 armed attacks, marking a 32% increase in violence compared to 2023. A total of 79 piracy incidents were recorded, down from 99 in the same period last year, the lowest since 1994.

Indonesia saw 17 incidents, with 27 hostages taken. In contrast, piracy in the Gulf of Guinea dropped to 12 incidents, though crew safety remains a concern. The IMB praised efforts to improve maritime security but urged continued vigilance.
