The evolution of the vessels

 

Shipping’s digitalization is transforming vessels into “floating offices and homes,” enhancing operations and crew welfare. At SMM Hamburg, Inmarsat Maritime and HANSA International highlighted the industry’s shift to AI, IoT, and connectivity.

Pankaj Sharma of Columbia Shipmanagement emphasized that digitalization, now essential, supports tasks like remote maintenance using real-time data and technologies such as virtual reality. Marty Cochrane noted that modern connectivity turns vessels into connected assets, while Marco Camporeale stressed the importance of “always-on” cloud infrastructure for reducing administrative burdens and keeping crew connected.

Hapag-Lloyd is installing 1.8 million IoT devices for real-time cargo tracking, while Matthias Bloete of Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG advised companies to consider more than financial returns when adopting new tech. Inmarsat’s NexusWave ensures secure, reliable connectivity, protecting both operations and crew.
