The Balkans: A region undergoing transformation

The Balkans are undergoing a transformation fueled by billions of euros invested in transport networks, wind farms, and solar plants, creating opportunities for specialized logistics services.

The ongoing war in Ukraine has increased the strategic importance of the region, with the EU ramping up investments in renewable energy and infrastructure. Military convoys have strained logistics, especially in Romania and Bulgaria, and sanctions against Russia have shifted trade routes, impacting transport volumes.

The EU’s renewed focus on integrating the Balkans into its bloc is driving regional cooperation and economic growth.

The New Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, supported by a €6 billion fund, aims to facilitate EU accession by boosting infrastructure and clean energy projects, which will also benefit the transport sector.

Renewable energy is a key focus, with countries like Bosnia, Serbia, and Greece investing heavily in wind, solar, and hydropower projects.

This boom in renewable energy is expected to stimulate the project cargo and logistics sectors, although local infrastructure still faces challenges, particularly at ports. Improved transport links and collaboration between regional hubs, like Thessaloniki, are crucial for handling the surge in projects. Despite these challenges, the future for project cargo in the Balkans remains promising, with substantial investments in renewable energy and infrastructure driving growth.
