Large Hospital Ship with Danish Volunteers Heads to Ghana
The hospital ship Global Mercy, the world’s largest civilian hospital ship, is currently sailing to Ghana, where it will provide thousands of free surgeries and dental treatments over the next ten months. Among the international volunteer crew is Danish pharmacist Karen Chan from Copenhagen.
Operated by the non-profit organisation Mercy Ships, Global Mercy is expected to arrive in the port city of Tema on 18 August. During its stay, Mercy Ships plans to perform between 1,950 and 2,600 free surgeries, as well as up to 2,145 free dental procedures for patients from across Ghana.
The vessel’s crew of up to 600 volunteers includes surgeons, doctors, nurses, dentists, maritime professionals, cooks, cleaners, and support staff from around the world. Karen Chan has been helping prepare the ship’s pharmacy and medical supplies ahead of the mission.
“I feel incredibly fortunate to have received an education in Denmark that can also benefit people elsewhere in the world. One way I can give back is by using my skills to help others,” she said.
The need for surgical care in Ghana remains significant. Many district hospitals lack diagnostic imaging equipment, adequately equipped operating theatres, and trained surgeons. Even larger hospitals often face challenges with reliable access to oxygen and essential resources. In addition, many patients must cover a large share of their medical expenses themselves, making treatment inaccessible for many.
As a result, numerous Ghanaians live with treatable conditions such as tumours, cleft lip and palate, clubfoot, burn injuries, dental diseases, and eye conditions. While in Ghana, Global Mercy will provide specialised procedures including tumour removals, reconstructive surgery, paediatric orthopaedics, cataract surgery, obstetric fistula treatment, and general surgery.
Beyond direct patient care, Mercy Ships works closely with the Ghanaian government to strengthen the country’s healthcare system through training and capacity building. The organisation’s goal is to leave a lasting impact that extends well beyond the ship’s departure.
This will be Mercy Ships’ sixth mission to Ghana, with its first visit dating back to 1991.
