Rohde Nielsen Completes Capital Dredging Works for New Quay Development at Port of Aalborg

Rohde Nielsen has successfully completed a major capital dredging project at the Port of Aalborg, Denmark, marking a significant milestone in the development of the port's new Quay 8017 and its broader expansion programme.

The works involved the excavation of approximately 160,000 cubic metres of soft seabed material to establish the required water depths and seabed conditions for the construction of the new quay structure. The project forms a key part of the Port of Aalborg’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its infrastructure and accommodate future growth in maritime and industrial activities.

To ensure efficient and environmentally controlled handling of the dredged material, Rohde Nielsen utilised a combination of floating and land-based pipeline systems for transportation from the dredging site. This approach enabled the material to be moved safely while minimising disruption to port operations and the surrounding environment.

The dredging operations were carried out by the trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Toste R, one of Rohde Nielsen’s specialised vessels designed for large-scale marine excavation projects. The vessel played a central role in delivering the required seabed improvements within the project’s technical specifications.

Completion of the dredging campaign provides the necessary foundation for the construction of Quay 8017, which is expected to enhance the port’s operational capabilities and support increased maritime traffic in the years ahead. The new facility will contribute to the Port of Aalborg’s long-term development strategy, reinforcing its position as an important logistics and industrial hub in Northern Europe.

Rohde Nielsen is currently hiring a Technical Project Manager and a HSEQ Manager – Projects

With the capital dredging phase now concluded, the Port of Aalborg can move forward with the next stages of its infrastructure programme, creating additional capacity to serve future business opportunities and regional economic growth.

The successful completion of the project highlights Rohde Nielsen’s continued expertise in complex dredging and marine construction support works, while underscoring the critical role dredging plays in enabling modern port expansion and maritime infrastructure development.
