Scandlines converts “Schleswig-Holstein” into hybrid ferry
Scandlines has sent the ferry Schleswig-Holstein, operating on the Puttgarden–Rødby route, to a shipyard in Klaipėda for a major refurbishment and conversion project worth more than €25 million.
The upgrade includes a complete redesign of the passenger areas on decks 5 and 6, featuring new restaurants, cafés, shopping facilities, modern lounge spaces, and an outdoor sun deck area with a playground. Toilet facilities will also be expanded and modernised. According to Scandlines, the redesign is based on customer data and travel patterns, with the aim of improving passenger flow, reducing waiting times, and enhancing the onboard experience through new catering concepts and digital ordering solutions.
In addition to the passenger-focused improvements, the vessel will be converted into a plug-in hybrid ferry capable of covering most of its energy needs through shore power. During the refurbishment, the route will be maintained by Scandlines’ four remaining ferries.
The investment forms part of Scandlines’ strategy to extend the vessel’s operational life, strengthen competitiveness, and reduce emissions. The German Ministry of Transport is supporting the hybrid conversion through its Sustainable Modernisation of Coastal Vessels funding programme.
The Schleswig-Holstein is expected to return to service later this year. It will become one of two plug-in hybrid ferries operating on the Puttgarden–Rødby route, supporting Scandlines’ ambition to achieve direct-emission-free operations by 2040. The company has already taken another step in that direction with the introduction of the electric freight ferry Baltic Whale earlier this year.
