IMO-WISTA women in maritime survey opens

Governments and industry are urged to participate in the second Women in Maritime Survey to promote gender diversity in maritime sectors. The survey, led by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and WISTA International, gathers data on women’s roles in maritime and ocean industries, aiming to support policies that increase female participation.
IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez called on global stakeholders to join the effort, stating it will help create a more inclusive workplace and better allocate resources.
“Join me in championing diversity and fostering a barrier free workplace for all by completing the survey, which will allow for a more targeted use of resources and ensure that we are well placed to navigate the challenges that the future brings.” Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, IMO Secretary-General
The 2021 survey revealed that women make up less than 2% of seafarers and less than a third of the overall maritime workforce.
WISTA President Elpi Petraki emphasized that the survey is vital for shaping forward-thinking policies to improve diversity. Open until 31 December 2024, the survey targets governments, companies, organizations, and maritime academies, with results to be published in May 2025.
This initiative is part of IMO’s broader efforts to enhance gender balance in maritime.
