WISTA at 50
From small beginnings 50 years ago, WISTA has grown exponentially and expanded its mission to become a dynamic association representing diversity, equity and inclusion at the heart of global shipping trading and logistics .

WISTA, founded 50 years ago by four women in London’s maritime sector, has grown into a global association promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in shipping, trade, and logistics. Today, WISTA has over 5,500 members across 59 national associations.
WISTA’s mission focuses on empowering women and addressing gender imbalances in an evolving industry. Its collaborations with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) led to the 2021 Women in Maritime Survey, which highlighted that women make up 29% of the industry workforce but only 2% of seafarers. A second survey is ongoing to track progress.
“WISTA is one of the strongest voices advocating for greater diversity, equity and inclusion in global trade, and worked towards these goals even before the term DEI was coined.” Elpi Petraki, President WISTA International
WISTA has launched initiatives like the IMO WISTA Speakers Bureau, with nearly 400 female speakers registered, and continues to collaborate with key industry organizations. As it marks its anniversary, WISTA remains committed to fostering gender equality and advancing DEI in the maritime sector, supported by its volunteers and global partnerships.
