Philippines maximizes the nation’s maritime potential

The Philippines has approved the Maritime Industry Development Plan 2028 (MIDP), a comprehensive 10-year blueprint for advancing the maritime sector and to maximize the nation’s maritime potential.

The MIDP outlines strategies to enhance the Philippine Merchant Fleet, supporting the government’s economic campaign “AmBisyon Natin 2024” meaning “Our Ambition 2024”.

It provides guidelines for agencies like the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) to implement and monitor improvements in shipping, shipbuilding, workforce development, transport safety, and environmental sustainability.

A MIDP Technical Board, including representatives from MARINA and other agencies, will oversee the plan. Key initiatives include digital transformation, sustainable innovation, and improved maritime governance.

MARINA administrator Sonia Malaluan highlighted goals such as nationwide digitalization of services, ISO 9001:2015 certification, and compliance with the 2023 IMO GHG emissions strategy.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) emphasized coordination between maritime agencies and private sector stakeholders to align efforts with the MIDP, fostering a robust blue economy. Read more here.
