New submarine orders for TKMS

Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has secured an order from Singapore’s Defense Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) for two more Type 218SG submarines, expanding an already profitable partnership. This brings the total number of submarines ordered to six, following previous orders for vessels like the “Invincible” and “Impeccable.”
The Type 218SG submarines are designed for a low signature and feature air-independent propulsion, enabling extended underwater durations. At 70 meters long and 2,000 tons, they are among the largest submarines TKMS has ever built.
Singapore first ordered two submarines from TKMS in 2013 for €1.7 billion, followed by two more in 2016, to replace older Swedish-built units. The order is part of Singapore’s defense buildup due to the rising military influence of China.
With this order, TKMS’ order book has grown to around €16 billion. CEO Oliver Burkhard noted that the order highlights the positive market conditions in naval shipbuilding. Despite high capacity utilization, TKMS can manage this expansion within its existing facilities.
TKMS employs over 8,000 people at its shipyards in Kiel, Wismar, and Itajaí, with Kiel being the largest location. While rumors of selling or separating the shipbuilding arm from Thyssenkrupp persist, no final decision has been made.
