Connecting Africa and Europe
Plans for a €6 billion underwater tunnel connecting Spain and Morocco through the Strait of Gibraltar are being studied, with completion targeted by 2030.
The idea dates back to the 1930s, but early attempts were hindered by difficult geology. Renewed interest, driven by the upcoming 2030 World Cup in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, has revived the project.
The tunnel would span 28 kilometers underwater, reaching depths of 475 meters. If completed, it could transport 12.8 million passengers and 13 million tons of cargo annually.
Financial and strategic feasibility studies are currently underway.
