An energy-efficient ship

Hurtigruten has unveiled an updated design for its “Sea Zero” project, aiming to launch an emission-free cruise ship by 2030. The design, created by Norwegian shipbuilder Vard, features large batteries, sails, and other innovations to reduce energy consumption by 40-50% compared to conventional ships. The retractable sails are expected to cut emissions by up to 10%, with solar panels contributing an additional 2-3%.

Key features include 60 MWh battery storage, counter-rotating propellers, and air lubrication of the hull to reduce water resistance and save energy. The ship will also feature “intelligent cabins” that allow guests to monitor and control their energy use.

Despite leading in a recent environmental ranking, Hurtigruten acknowledges that the cruise industry must take further action to reduce emissions.
