The art of sustainable efforts
Wärtsilä Danmark is the first marine sector company to be certified according to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
The technology group Wärtsilä’s local Marine office in Denmark, Wärtsilä Danmark A/S has been awarded a
certification by the classification society Bureau Veritas’ in accordance with the United Nations Sustainable
Development Goals.
A newly developed scheme from Bureau Veritas Certification, which documents companies’ implementation
of the UN’s sustainable development goals for sustainable development.
Wärtsilä Danmark’s efforts with mapping, selection and implementation of the world goals are screened and
assessed according to established criteria.
If the company meets the established requirements of continuously improving their efforts towards a sustainable future, the company will subsequently receive a certificate. After the certification, annual maintenance visits are carried out to document the further efforts to comply with the UN sustainable development goals.
The certification provides a structured approach to sustainability and confirms that the company has established and implemented a management system dedicated to meeting the UN’s sustainable development goals. The certification was awarded in May 2021, making Wärtsilä Danmark the first marine sector company to be recognised in this way. “We work with local targets, national targets as well as global targets. Large and small focus areas with further focus on our value chain project & green fuels,” says Morten Brandborg, Managing Director & General Manager Sales, Wärtsilä Danmark A/S.

They have convinced us that the company has the means and determination to realise the goals set out by the United Nations. The holistic commitment to sustainability both from a social and environmental perspective from the Danish Department in Wärtsilä are setting an example to the marine sector,” says lead auditor Ole Overgaard, Bureau Veritas.
Wärtsilä’s concrete actions towards reducing harmful exhaust emissions include developing and disseminating technologies that lower energy consumption, as well as technologies that enable the full or partial use of sustainable fuels.
The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals or Global Goals are a collection of 17 inter-linked targets designed to be a ‘blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all’. The goals were established in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly, and are intended to be achieved by the year 2030.
The main activities at Wärtsilä Danmark A/S, owned by Wärtsilä Corporation, are the sales and service of engines for power plants and comprehensive portfolio of products and solutions for the marine market. Field Service activities are performed on-site or in one of Wärtsiläs many workshop, either by Wärtsilä Danmark A/S employed field service engineers or via other of the world wide Wärtsilä service entities. The Wärtsilä Danmark A/S main office is placed in Nørresundby and a sales office in Copenhagen, total number of employees is 78.
