Safe navigation for Ukrainian seafarers

Maritime industry representatives came together at ITF House for the Ukraine Maritime Forum.

Ukrainian seafarers were the central topic last month when representatives from the maritime industry gathered at ITF House in London for an event organized by the Marine Transport Workers’ Trade Union of Ukraine (MTWTU).

The Forum presented a vision for Ukraine’s sustainable future as a leading provider of skilled maritime professionals and a forward-looking maritime economy, open to investments in maritime education, research, and digital technologies.

In his opening, ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Hongbo called for international solidarity and support for Ukraine. He emphasized the importance of unity and expressed deep concern for workers and communities impacted by the ongoing conflict.

“Without seafarers, there is no shipping, there is no shopping. “

IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez voiced his strong support for all seafarers, including those from Ukraine.

“Without seafarers, there is no shipping, there is no shopping. I urge everyone to join our campaign to support seafarers and recognise their indispensable role in our daily lives.”

At the event, MTWTU, an ITF affiliate, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the State Service for Maritime, Inland Waterway Transport and Shipping of Ukraine. This agreement confirms a joint effort to protect Ukrainian maritime workers’ labor rights and develop opportunities for future seafarers to acquire qualifications meeting international standards. It also focuses on assisting Ukrainian seafarers in crises, from navigating war zones to maintaining mental health on merchant ships.
