Maersk wants 50 new ships

In continuation of its fleet renewal programme initiated in 2021, A.P. Moller - Maersk (Maersk) is in the process of signing newbuilding orders and time-charter contracts for dual-fuel vessels matching the planned renewal pace of around 160,000 TEU per year.

Maersk, Denmark’s second-largest global container shipper, plans a major fleet expansion to boost capacity by 160,000 TEU annually. The company will order or charter ships totaling 800,000 TEU due to long lead times. Currently, Maersk’s order book includes 29 ships (375,000 TEU), while MSC and CMA CGM have 100 and 88 ships on order, respectively.

Maersk will invest in 50-60 new ships (800,000 TEU) for 2026-2030, with 300,000 TEU from new builds and the rest from charters. These ships will be dual-fuel, using methanol and LNG, aligning with Maersk’s 2040 net zero emissions goal. The fleet’s total capacity will be maintained at 4.3 million TEU, with new ships replacing older ones.
