Ørsted launches world’s first heavy-lift cargo drone

Ørsted, a global leader in offshore wind, is deploying heavy-lift cargo drones for the first time at the Borssele 1&2 Offshore Wind Farm. This innovative approach enhances operational efficiency and safety by using 70 kg drones with a 2.6-meter wingspan to transport up to 100 kg of cargo directly to the 94 turbines.

Instead of the traditional method—where a vessel uses a crane to move equipment to the turbine and then another crane to the nacelle—the drones make the trip from the vessel to the nacelle in about four minutes. This is a significant improvement over the six hours required by conventional methods.

Ørsted’s use of drones speeds up the process 10-15 times, cuts costs, and boosts safety. Turbines remain operational during deliveries, reducing risks and minimizing the need for multiple ship trips, which lowers carbon emissions.
