Growing Interest in German Maritime Shipping

Interest in German maritime shipping is rising, with significantly more trainees in 2024 than the previous year. The number of female trainees nearly doubled, from 12 to 23. “Efforts to attract young talent are paying off,” said Sabine Zeller, BBS Managing Director. Ship mechanic training contracts increased by 18%. The BBS annual report recorded 141 new contracts, nearly 40% from secondary school graduates. The industry faces global, technological, and ecological challenges, making training essential for future readiness.

A Steady Upward Trend
After a stabilization in 2020, trainee numbers rebounded despite COVID-19 setbacks. The increase reflects both economic recovery and demand for specialists in digitalization, sustainability, and technology.

AI and automation are transforming maritime roles, requiring new skills in digital systems and alternative fuels. “Today’s trainees are tomorrow’s sustainability experts,” BBS stated, emphasizing low-emission drives and energy-efficient technologies.
