Baltic States consider ship fee

Due to rising damage to submarine cables in the Baltic Sea, coastal states are considering a charge for ships. With 4,000 vessels passing daily, the region is highly vulnerable to incidents, including suspected sabotage by ship anchors.

To enhance protection, NATO plans to deploy frigates, patrol aircraft, and drones. Baltic states are also discussing sensors to detect anchors and protective barriers for cables.

These measures come at a cost, raising questions about who will pay—states, cable operators, or consumers through taxes or energy prices. While 150 submarine cables are damaged globally each year, the Baltic remains particularly at risk.
