Reducing the risk of whale strikes

Each year, a significant number of whales die after being struck by ships. The heavy traffic across the world’s oceans often poses a threat to the lives and health of whales.

Danish Shipping has introduced a policy to raise awareness and reduce whale strikes, which claim numerous whales’ lives annually due to ship collisions. These collisions can also present a risk to onboard safety, particularly on smaller vessels.

The policy aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and urges Danish Shipping members to follow guidelines from organizations like the IMO and World Shipping Council to avoid whale strikes, particularly in breeding areas. Nina Porst, Director of Climate, Environment, and Security, emphasized the responsibility of the shipping industry to act environmentally responsibly and protect marine biodiversity.

“We have a responsibility to consider the life in the seas our ships sail through. I hope that by raising awareness about the issue of whale strikes, we can help reduce the risk of them happening,” Nina Porst, Director of Climate, Environment, and Security at Danish Shipping.
