MPC Container Ships orders next series of newbuildings

MPC Container Ships is further expanding its fleet with four additional container ships. They will be built in China and are scheduled for delivery in 2028.

The Oslo-listed MPC Container Ships (MPCC), part of Hamburg’s MPC Capital AG, has ordered four 4,500-TEU newbuildings from Jiangsu Hantong Ship Heavy Industry in China, with delivery planned for the first half of 2028. Each vessel costs USD 58 million, bringing the order to USD 232 million, with options for two additional ships.

All four ships are already fixed on ten-year charters (with extension options) to a “leading global liner shipping company.” Designed jointly with the charterer, the vessels align with its network, operational needs, and sustainability goals. The initial charter period is expected to generate around USD 375 million in revenue and USD 242 million in EBITDA.

The ships will feature advanced energy-efficient technology, reducing slot costs by about 50% compared to similar-sized vessels. The investment supports MPCC’s move toward a younger, more efficient fleet and lowers regulatory and environmental risks. Financing will combine equity and debt to maintain flexibility.

CEO Constantin Baack said the new order strengthens MPCC’s fleet-renewal strategy and follows ten newbuildings secured this year. Recent activity also includes two 1,600-TEU feeders ordered from Fujian Mawei and four 4,500-TEU ships ordered from Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering, as well as the christening of the “NCL Nordland” (1,700 TEU) in Hamburg.
