Maersk investigates nuclear power for container ships
A.P. Møller Maersk, Denmark’s largest shipping company, has partnered with the classification society Lloyd’s Register and British nuclear developer Core Power to explore the potential for nuclear-powered container ships.
This was reported on a press release by Lloyd’s Register here.
This joint venture will assess the technical, economic, and regulatory feasibility of using 4th generation nuclear reactors for ship propulsion, focusing on safety and operational standards.
The study aims to determine the necessary updates to safety regulations and understand the operational conditions required for nuclear-powered ships in Europe.
If successful, this could pave the way for the first nuclear-powered Maersk container ship within the next 10-15 years, offering potential environmental benefits over traditional fossil fuels.
