Hapag-Lloyd expands fleet capacity

Hapag-Lloyd is modernizing its fleet with newbuilds and by upgrading seven older ships.

 

Economies of scale play a key role in container shippinglarger capacity lowers transport costs. To enhance efficiency, the company is expanding the capacity of seven Copiago-class ships from 9,300 TEU to 10,200 TEU at Cosco Zhoushan Shipyard in China.

Previously, Hapag-Lloyd upgraded seven Tubul-class vessels in Denmark, increasing their capacity from 8,000 TEU to 9,200 TEU.

The Copiago ships feature a double-island design, 19 container rows, and a 48.20m width. Modifications include raising the deckhouse by 5m and extending the funnels.

As part of its 700 million Fleet Upgrade Program, the company plans to modernize over 150 ships with 450 improvements. By 2026, more than 100 vessels will receive new, efficient propellers.
