Twelve new methanol-powered vessels for COSCO SHIPPING

The new green-energy vessels feature state-of-the-art design and technology developed by COSCO SHIPPING and offer a large loading capacity especially for reefer containers

COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry and COSCO SHIPPING Container Lines have signed a Shanghai contract for twelve 14,000 TEU dual-fuel methanol container ships. This move underscores COSCO’s commitment to green, low-carbon development and reducing environmental impact.

The new vessels, developed with the China Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering Design and Research Institute, feature advanced technology, including energy-saving designs and a large capacity for reefer containers. They are equipped with a powerful permanent magnet shaft generator, air lubrication systems, and meet the latest energy efficiency and cybersecurity standards.

COSCO SHIPPING is enhancing its fleet’s green credentials by building new ships and modernizing existing ones, including ordering twelve 24,000 TEU methanol-powered ships and converting eight more. The company is also exploring all-electric operations and biofuels to drive its sustainable development.

Sun Yunfei, Executive Vice President of COSCO SHIPPING Group, as well as leaders and guests from the Group’s Science and Technology Innovation Centre, COSCO SHIPPING Lines, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry, Beijing COSCO SHIPPING Ship Trading and other units witnessed the signing ceremony and congratulated the two parties on their renewed cooperation.
