Ernst Russ orders two tankers from Wuhu Shipyard

The Hamburg-based shipping company Ernst Russ is expanding its tanker fleet with two further newbuilds, whilst at the same time selling a container ship. The company has raised its EBIT forecast for 2026.

Ernst Russ has agreed to acquire two additional 18,500 dwt IMO Type II chemical and product tankers, expanding an order announced earlier this year. The latest acquisition brings the company’s fleet of this vessel type to six ships.

The newbuilds are under construction at Wuhu Shipyard in China. Delivery of the first vessel is expected shortly, while the second is scheduled for handover by the end of 2026. Both vessels will enter charter agreements with Cargill for a minimum of three years, adding an estimated $38.3 million to the company’s charter backlog.

Designed for the transport of vegetable oils, petroleum products and chemicals, the tankers feature twelve MarineLINE-coated cargo tanks. They are also prepared for future methanol use, carry Ice Class 1B certification, and are designed to operate in the Great Lakes region.

The investment forms part of Ernst Russ’ strategy to diversify and modernise its fleet while increasing long-term contracted revenue. The new three-year charters complement the five-year charter agreements secured for the first four sister vessels, helping spread future contract renewals over a longer period.

At the same time, Ernst Russ is divesting the 1,710 TEU container vessel EF Emma, built in 2008 and operated with Icelandic shipping company Eimskip. The sale has contributed to an improved earnings outlook, with the company raising its 2026 EBIT forecast to €55-65 million, up from the previous €45-55 million range.

According to the company, fleet technical availability has remained strong at approximately 97% this year. Ernst Russ stated that further vessel sales are not included in its updated forecast.

The latest tanker acquisitions underline the company’s continued focus on strengthening its position in the tanker market while building a more diversified and resilient fleet portfolio.
