Sweden bans discharge of scrubber wastewater

Sweden plans to ban the discharge of wastewater from open-loop scrubbers within its 12-mile zone starting July 2025, extending to all scrubber types by January 2029.

This follows a trend of global restrictions, with some Swedish ports already implementing bans.

While the EU has not yet established a uniform policy, the push for regulation is growing.

Last year, Germany’s Federal Environment Agency found scrubber discharges contain highly concerning pollutants, reinforcing the need for stricter controls.
