Campaign targets port workers for drug smuggling

The “Safe Harbour Alliance,” launched in October 2023, aims to combat drug smuggling through northern European ports, focusing on protecting port workers from criminal recruitment.

A key part of this effort is an awareness campaign and an anonymous whistleblower portal.

Ports like Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Hamburg are heavily targeted by drug smugglers, with substantial amounts of cocaine, cannabis, and amphetamines entering Europe, often originating from South America.

The initiative is backed by the Federal Criminal Police Office and involves cooperation between police, customs, and other port authorities to strengthen preventive measures against drug smuggling.

Hamburg’s leadership, including Mayor Peter Tschentscher, emphasizes the importance of these efforts, especially given the city’s role as a major hub for international drug trafficking.
