Laeisz leaves all container ships to Hede

Container shipping is no longer a core business for the Hamburg shipping company F. Laeisz. However, its last four ships are earning good money for the time being.

The “Porto” (built 2010, 2,800 TEU), the last of Laeisz’s container fleet, has been chartered to Chinese operator Hede International Shipping, according to the company’s “Fleet News.” Brokers report a rate of $28,000/day for 40 to 44 months starting mid-next year. While higher rates exist, such long-term deals are rare.

Nikolaus H. Schües, who manages Laeisz, noted that all four remaining ships are now with Hede, a reliable, growing partner. Earlier this year, Hede chartered the “Posen” and “Pona” (built 2007, 2,741 TEU each) for similar rates. In April, the “Pontresina” (built 2008, 2,646 TEU) was chartered for $18,500/day for 23 months, reflecting the market’s upward trend.

Celebrating its 200th anniversary last year, Laeisz plans to focus on gas tankers and car carriers. Schües recently acquired a stake in Diana Shipping.
