GC Rieber Shipping Plans All-Electric Shortsea Vessel with Government Support

GC Rieber Shipping, part of the Bergen-based GC Rieber Group, plans to build an all-electric, battery-powered shortsea vessel with financial backing from the Norwegian government.

Together with GC Rieber Minerals and Franzefoss Minerals, the company signed a letter of intent for the newbuild’s construction. The project is supported by a grant from Enova, Norway’s state funding agency, and aims to advance zero-emission maritime transport. “Enova’s support will help accelerate the transition to zero-emission shipping,” said GC Rieber Shipping CEO Einar Ytredal. The vessel will be developed in close cooperation with GC Rieber Minerals and Franzefoss Minerals. The project seeks to prove the economic and environmental viability of battery-electric propulsion for coastal freight. A letter of intent was also signed with K. Sætre & Sønner, specialists in bulk and general cargo transport in the North Sea. Designed for shortsea operations along the Norwegian coast, the ship will feature advanced battery systems and shore power integration. It will offer valuable experience in electric shipping and may serve as a model for broader adoption. “This project is crucial for enabling low-emission salt and mineral transport,” said Per Gunnar Syrdalen, CCO of GC Rieber Minerals. “A future-focused partnership among cargo owners is key to reaching net-zero. The involvement of our sister company is a major enabler.”
