Draghi report: The Future of European Competitiveness

The Draghi Report on the EU’s competitiveness is an important reminder of the challenges Europe faces in global competition, including within the shipping sector.

The long-awaited Draghi report could guide the new European Commission by proposing radical changes to the EU’s economic policy. Authored by former Italian prime minister and ECB president Mario Draghi, the 400-page report, commissioned by European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, is detailed, bold, and ambitious, advocating for greater EU integration.

Presented on September 9, The Future of European Competitiveness tackles three major challenges: closing the innovation gap with the U.S., aligning decarbonization with competitiveness, and enhancing economic security by reducing dependencies.

The report acknowledges that the EU can no longer rely on cheap Russian energy, boundless Chinese markets, or U.S. security. It stresses the need for significant investment in the green transition, including green energy expansion and the production of green fuels for the shipping industry.

Jacob K. Clasen, Deputy CEO of Danish Shipping, stated, “European shipping continues to grow, but others are growing faster. Therefore, we must constantly optimise our competitiveness and focus on innovation.”

Additionally, the report highlights the importance of equipping the workforce with new skills to meet the demands of the digital and green transformations in sectors like shipping.
