The Hartmann shipping group, based in Leer, East Frisia, is reflagging 18 LPG tankers – including one newbuild – under the Portuguese flag, totaling 250,000 gross tonnage.
These modern vessels will operate under the International Register of Shipping of Madeira (MAR), enhancing Hartmann’s partnership with the Portuguese-managed registry.
The decision follows changes in German tax rules affecting seafarers, prompting Hartmann to consolidate its fleet under MAR. Reflagging to Portugal supports crew continuity and aligns with European standards for quality and sustainability.
“We’re grateful Hartmann is expanding its partnership with MAR,” says Dr. Albrecht Gundermann of Euromar, which brokers registry matters with Portuguese authorities. “In uncertain times, choosing an EU flag is more important than ever.”
Hartmann’s move reinforces MAR’s growth as a competitive European shipping registry.
