A recent study on seafarers’ working and living conditions reveals significant deficiencies, especially in crucial areas like internet access, which is increasingly vital.
The report, titled “Social Impact Report” by Idwal, a British company specializing in ship inspections, evaluates ten key aspects of seafarers’ well-being, such as accommodation, connectivity, health, and recreation. It highlights substantial gaps between industry promises and the actual conditions experienced by crew members.
The study identifies an overall deficit of 27.6% across various categories, indicating widespread shortcomings in the industry.
Particularly concerning is the poor performance in connectivity, with an average score of 5.4 out of 10, underscoring major deficiencies across all types of ships.
General cargo ships and older vessels face significant challenges due to outdated equipment, while larger ships generally offer better connectivity but still vary in quality.
The report calls for significant investments in improving internet bandwidth, Wi-Fi infrastructure, and crew access solutions. It emphasizes the need to balance cost, technical limitations, and cybersecurity considerations.
Based on data from over 13,000 ship inspections, Idwal emphasizes the urgency for stakeholders to prioritize tangible improvements in crew welfare.
