Seafarers, like people ashore, often criticize the next generation. Past generations have claimed that today’s seafarers have it easy compared to their own experiences, often highlighting their own hardships. Generation Z faces considerable criticism for not accepting outdated practices without question. They are more inclined to challenge established norms and seek better solutions, often prioritizing promotion over seniority.
Growing up in a digital age, this generation is uniquely equipped with skills that enhance their capabilities at sea. It is crucial that they contribute to revising the STCW Convention and other regulations, as their fresh ideas are vital for the industry’s future.
This generation’s tendency to question established methods can drive significant changes in maritime operations, from improving safety protocols to reforming ship ownership and registration systems. If the industry does not adapt, these young professionals will seek opportunities elsewhere.
