How is METAFUEL removing fire barriers for e-fuels?

Current fire safety standards fall short for vessels using e-fuels like methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen.

To address this, the Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology (DBI) is developing METAFUEL under ShippingLab. This project aims to create a tool for designing adaptable fire strategies for any vessel, whether newly built or converted.

While alternative fuels have been transported as cargo, using them for propulsion presents new fire risks, that existing guidelines do not adequately cover.

With hybrid solutions combining alternative and traditional fuels becoming more common, there is an urgent need for immediate guidance to ensure the safety of crews, passengers, and cargo without hindering the green transition.

METAFUEL will develop solutions for these challenges, focusing on both crew safety and ship technology. Supported by ShippingLab, the project seeks to standardize fire strategies for vessels using green fuels, removing obstacles to the maritime sector’s green transition.
