Headway pioneers with new CCS and carbon value chain

Headway, a supplier specializing in gas supply and ballast water systems, has installed a centrifugal onboard carbon capture system (OCCS) on a ship in China for the first time.

Headway Technology Group has installed the OceanGuard OCCS on the 57,000-ton bulker Yue Dian 56 at Logshan shipyard in China, marking the first deployment of a centrifugal carbon capture system (OCCS) in the country. Partners included Guangdong Energy Group, CHN Energy New Energy Technology Research Institute, and China Classification Society (CCS), aiming to set a new standard for onboard carbon capture.

The system combines carbon absorption, desorption, liquefaction, and LCO₂ storage using high-speed centrifugal technology and the GNX-3 absorber. It achieves over 90% carbon capture with CO₂ purity above 99.6%, offering improved efficiency, lower energy use, and a compact design for easier installation and transport.

Captured LCO₂ will be transported to the Zhoushan Pilot Free Trade Zone via specialized tankers. There, Headway will use it in sustainable fuel projects to synthesize methanol and ammonia, creating a closed green life cycle for carbon.
