Renk acquires David Brown Defence

Renk, a company specialising in military propulsion solutions, is expanding its capacity in the naval sector: David Brown Defence (DBD) is expanding the portfolio of the Augsburg-based gearbox manufacturer.

Renk and Stellex Capital Management have signed a binding agreement for the acquisition of David Brown Defence (DBD), a specialist in high-precision gearboxes for naval and land-based defence applications.

The acquisition supports Renk’s strategy of expanding its defence portfolio through targeted M&A. According to CEO Alexander Sagel, DBD strengthens Renk’s presence in the Five Eyes countries, provides access to major naval programmes, expands aftermarket opportunities, and adds expertise in submarine propulsion systems. Renk also reaffirmed its long-term commitment to DBD’s Huddersfield facility and the UK defence industry.

The transaction has received support from the UK government. Rupert Pearce, the UK’s National Defence Director, described the deal as a significant investment that will strengthen supply chain resilience, protect skilled jobs, and support the capabilities of the British Armed Forces.

With more than 100 years of experience, DBD employs around 530 people and supplies transmission systems to major defence programmes in the UK, Australia, and Canada.

A key benefit for Renk is access to major naval projects, including the Global Combat Ship programme, which covers up to 34 vessels such as Type 26 frigates, Hunter-class frigates, and River-class destroyers. DBD’s secured order book and pipeline exceed £700 million between 2026 and 2030.

The acquisition strengthens Renk’s leadership in the naval gearbox market while creating long-term growth opportunities through naval aftermarket services. DBD’s portfolio spans surface vessel propulsion gearboxes, low-noise submarine propulsion systems, and land-based defence platforms, including programmes such as Challenger 2 and Boxer vehicles.
