100% battery-electric: New cruise concept from Meyer Werft
The Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg has once again developed a new cruise ship concept for the important industry trade fair Seatrade Cruise Global in the USA: 100% battery-electric and 82,000 GT.

In recent years, the shipbuilder from the far north‑west of the country has repeatedly presented innovative concepts at the trade fair – and this year was no exception. After unveiling a climate‑neutral cruise ship concept for senior citizens in 2025, the shipyard’s 2026 concept is titled “Vision”. According to the company, it is the world’s first 100% battery‑electric cruise ship exceeding 80,000 GT. Project “Vision” is 275 m long, accommodates 1,856 passengers and has a gross tonnage of around 82,000 GT.
“We examined how innovation can help reduce CO₂ and contribute to decarbonization – not in 50 years, but now,” said Tim Krug from the Meyer Werft Concept Development Group. “Our concept enables greenhouse‑gas reductions of up to 95%.” Johannes Bade, who leads the development program, added that battery‑electric cruise ships represent a competitive, technology‑ready solution that opens new opportunities for sustainable long‑term operations.
Although no order has yet been placed, a key partner has already joined the project. The battery system will be supplied by Norway’s Corvus Energy. “We are pleased to collaborate with Corvus Energy, a pioneer in safe and reliable maritime battery systems, which has equipped more than half of the world’s hybrid and fully electric seagoing vessels,” said Chief Sales Officer Thomas Weigend. He added that the technology is available today and that delivery could take place as early as 2031 if orders are received this year.
Corvus Energy CEO Fredrik Witte described the cooperation as a “natural progression of battery technology,” stating that fully electric cruise ships demonstrate that the technology is safe, mature, and ready to set new standards.
According to the shipyard, the battery system would cover a large share of typical European cruise routes, such as Barcelona–Civitavecchia. By 2030, more than 100 European ports are expected to have suitable charging infrastructure. Hybrid versions with small generators could also be built, enabling longer voyages such as Atlantic crossings.
The concept eliminates the need for an exhaust gas shaft and funnel, freeing space on the upper decks and enabling a new sundeck design with unobstructed views. Designed as an all‑weather ship, “Vision” features fully glazed, weather‑protected areas, while the Aqua Park has been relocated indoors at the stern for year‑round use.
