Mangalia Shipyard: Rheinmetall confirms takeover

The insolvency administrator announced last week that Rheinmetall had been awarded the contract for the insolvent Romanian Mangalia shipyard. The German defence contractor has now also commented on the matter.

The group has confirmed plans to acquire the Mangalia shipyard in Romania, in partnership with Swiss shipping company MSC. The two companies aim to transform the facility into a dual-use shipyard supporting both civilian and military shipbuilding. The site will be divided into separate operational and security zones, allowing commercial and defence projects to run simultaneously.

The acquisition, expected to be completed within weeks, carries a purchase price of approximately €138 million, shared by both partners.

For Rheinmetall’s Naval Systems division, Mangalia will play a central role in building four vessels ordered by the Romanian government: two 96-metre offshore patrol vessels and two 43-metre submarine support ships. The yard is also intended to become a hub for future military shipbuilding projects, strengthening Rheinmetall’s position in South-Eastern Europe.

Tim Wagner, CEO of Rheinmetall Naval Systems, said the company plans to modernise and expand the shipyard, upgrade infrastructure, improve production conditions, and increase capacity to support long-term regional growth.

Rheinmetall has already maintained a presence in Romania since 2024 through Rheinmetall Automecanica in Mediaș.
