Germany calls for more support from the EU

The German Shipowners’ Association (VDR) has urged EU President Ursula von der Leyen to enhance Europe’s competitiveness in shipping. Amid industry challenges, her reappointment is seen as crucial for securing the European shipping industry’s future.

VDR President Gaby Bornheim stresses the need for a proactive European shipping policy focused on growth and competitiveness, especially in today’s geopolitical climate. The VDR opposes regional climate protection measures, advocating for harmonized international regulations under the IMO.

Bornheim calls for a European Industrial Deal to counteract global protectionist trends that threaten free trade. EU shipping employs 640,000 people, with Germany playing a leading role, employing around 60,000 seafarers.
