Maritime executives seek geopolitical training

Geopolitics and the resulting upheavals and challenges have become the central theme of management training in the maritime industry.

Geopolitics has become a central theme in maritime executive training as global instability reshapes risk assessment, capital access, and strategic planning. A Copenhagen Business School report notes that demand for geopolitical expertise has surged over the last 18 months. Irene Rosberg, who leads the Blue MBA and Blue Board Leadership programs, says executives increasingly seek clarity on sanctions, trade fragmentation, regional power shifts, and their effects on financing, insurance, and operations.

Ongoing conflicts, protectionism, energy-security concerns, and major-power competition are disrupting trade patterns and influencing fleet and chartering decisions. These pressures have prompted shipping companies, insurers, regulators, and maritime service providers to join a CBS geopolitical workshop focused on structured analytical frameworks rather than reactive decision-making.

Rosberg stresses that risks can no longer be categorized solely as technical or regulatory, as political dynamics and shifting alliances increasingly shape operational realities. Leadership training is thus shifting toward strategic governance – equipping executives to recognize systemic risks, evaluate secondary effects, and safeguard long-term value in an environment defined by volatility. She argues that understanding geopolitics is now a fundamental requirement for maritime leaders.
