Danish shipowner makes bold move with methanol tanker order
In one swift move, M.H. Simonsen has surged to the forefront among Danish shipping's methanol pioneers with a significant order for 8 dual-fuel chemical tankers.
Svendborg based shipowner M. H. Simonsen has taken a significant leap forward in Danish shipping by securing a substantial order for eight dual-fuel methanol chemical tankers. This strategic move places the company at the forefront of Denmark’s methanol pioneers.
The order, placed with the Chinese shipyard New Jiangzhou Shipbuilding, signals M.H. Simonsen’s commitment to embracing green technology. Each of the 6,800-ton deadweight tankers will feature dual-fuel methanol engines, a pioneering step in the industry.
CEO Lars Hjorth Simonsen remains optimistic about the future, citing advancements in engine technology and the availability of suitable sizes for their fleet. The decision marks both a fleet expansion and renewal for the company, which currently operates 14 chemical tankers.
Despite market concerns about the availability and pricing of green methanol, M.H. Simonsen is confident that the ships will be ready to sail on eco-friendly fuel upon delivery in 2026. The company’s faith in the transition to green energy aligns with ongoing efforts by organizations like the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to address pricing differentials between green and traditional bunker fuels.
New Jiangzhou Shipbuilding’s innovative design for the tankers, incorporating green technology and intelligent operation, represents a breakthrough for small and medium-sized methanol chemical tankers. The Chinese shipyard’s receipt of orders from European shipping companies underscores its growing reputation in the global market.
M.H. Simonsen’s decision to partner with a Chinese shipyard reflects confidence in their capabilities, despite their distance from Denmark and limited prior collaborations. This bold move signifies the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the maritime industry.
