SMM 2026 Sees Growing International Participation

SMM 2026 is set to welcome an even broader international audience as the world's leading maritime trade fair continues to expand its global reach. With 26 national pavilions, two more than at the previous edition, eleven new exhibiting countries, and several first-time official country representations, the event underscores its position as a key meeting place for the global maritime industry.

Taking place in Hamburg, SMM 2026 will bring together companies, associations, governments, and industry leaders from across the maritime sector to discuss innovation, cooperation, and the future of shipping and shipbuilding.

“SMM is more than ever the central meeting place for the maritime industry,” said Claus Ulrich Selbach, Vice President Exhibitions Maritime & Technology at Hamburg Messe und Congress. “The growing international participation shows that face-to-face exchange across national borders is more important than ever.”

India Expands Its Presence at SMM

One of the most notable developments at SMM 2026 is the significantly increased participation from India. For the first time, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), together with the Indian Ports Association, is organising two official Indian pavilions.

Around 35 Indian exhibitors are expected to participate, including Chowgule & Company, Buoyancy Consultants & Engineering, Swan Defence and Heavy Industries, Vedam Design & Technical Consultancy, Marine Electricals, and Synergy Shipbuilders N Dock Works.

India’s growing role in the maritime sector will also be highlighted in the conference programme. Shri Vijay Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, will participate in the Official Opening Conference with a presentation on India’s perspective on global maritime growth and connectivity.

Additional sessions will focus on shipbuilding investment opportunities, maritime clusters, and international cooperation, while Indian shipyards and maritime organisations will showcase their capabilities in the Naval Hall.

India will also feature prominently at the new ALL ABOUT PORTS conference, where discussions will address the country’s ambitions to develop competitive, technology-driven, and sustainable logistics hubs.

New Official Pavilions from Brazil, Cyprus and Vietnam

Brazil will be represented by an official national pavilion for the first time, organised by the Brazilian Association of Companies of the Blue Economy (ABEEMAR). The pavilion will showcase companies supporting innovation, sustainability, and business development within Brazil’s growing maritime economy.

Cyprus will also debut an official national pavilion, organised by the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Cyprus in cooperation with the Shipping Deputy Ministry and the Cyprus Trade Centre in Berlin. Ten companies and institutions will be represented, covering maritime services, ship repair, communications, automation, artificial intelligence, research, and classification services.

Participants include the Cyprus Marine & Maritime Institute (CMMI), Tototheo Maritime, Multimarine Services, and the Shipping Deputy Ministry. The programme will also feature the Cyprus Maritime Innovation Event, focusing on technological innovation and business opportunities within the country’s maritime sector.

Vietnam will be officially represented for the first time through the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Association (VISIA). In addition to exhibiting, VISIA will contribute to discussions on digital engineering and global shipbuilding partnerships.

Several countries will also participate in SMM for the first time, including Luxembourg, Azerbaijan, the Philippines, Andorra, the Bahamas, Slovakia, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, and Curaçao.

Strong Growth from Asia’s Leading Shipbuilding Nations

The major shipbuilding nations of Asia continue to strengthen their presence at SMM.

China remains the largest international country representation at the exhibition and will further expand its participation in 2026. A new highlight will be the inaugural China-Europe Maritime Summit, jointly organised by the German Shipowners’ Association (VDR), the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI), and DNV. The summit will focus on industrial cooperation, technological innovation, and the industry’s transformation.

South Korea is also increasing its presence, with major exhibitors including Korean Register, Panasia, Bosung Engineering, Daeyang Electric, and Kangrim Heavy Industries.

Japan will likewise expand its representation through the Japan Ship Machinery and Equipment Association (JSMEA), reinforcing the country’s long-standing role within the global maritime industry.

Increased Participation from Europe

Several European countries are also reporting strong growth in exhibitor numbers. France is among the fastest-growing participants, while Austria, Spain, Norway, and the Netherlands are all expected to have a larger presence compared to the previous edition.

The growing participation reflects continuing interest in SMM as a platform for business development, networking, and showcasing maritime innovation.

High-Level International Delegations Expected

Beyond exhibitors, SMM 2026 will host high-level delegations from governments, navies, coast guards, and industry organisations.

Official naval and government delegations have already been announced from countries including Albania, Argentina, Brazil, Finland, France, Ghana, the United Kingdom, India, Qatar, South Korea, Romania, Spain, and Türkiye.

Business delegations are also expected from organisations such as the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, the China Shipowners Association, and the Cooperative Association of Japan Shipbuilders, along with industry representatives from China, India, and Colombia.

Shanghai Vice Mayor Jie Chen is also expected to attend. His visit coincides with the 40th anniversary of the partnership between Hamburg and Shanghai, which will be marked by an official reception celebrating the strong maritime and economic ties between the two cities.

Global Maritime Industry Gathering in Hamburg

By bringing together established maritime powers alongside emerging shipping and shipbuilding nations, SMM 2026 continues to strengthen its role as a global platform for collaboration and innovation.

With growing international participation, expanded conference programmes, and a strong focus on future industry challenges, the event is expected to once again serve as one of the maritime sector’s most important forums for networking, business development, and shaping the future of global shipping.
