VARD-built stern trawler marks a new chapter for Havbryn AS
VARD, a subsidiary of the Fincantieri Group and one of the major global designers and shipbuilders of specialized vessels, is happy to announce that Havbryn, the new advanced stern trawler for Havbryn AS and operator Strand Rederi, was officially named today at the shipowner’s home port in Ålesund.
Milla Louise Strand Follestad served as Godmother during the ceremony, marking a proud milestone for Havbryn AS, VARD and the maritime community on the west coast of Norway.
The 80.4-metre vessel is based on VARD’s proven VARD 8 02 design and replaces the previous Havbryn from 2013 which was built in Turkey. Designed for semi-pelagic and bottom-trawling operations, the vessel combines efficient fishing, high product quality and reduced environmental footprint.

The vessel was delivered on time, and the naming ceremony both marks the completion of the project and the beginning of a new era for us.

Havbryn AS is a part of Strand Rederi, one of Norway’s largest family-owned fishing boat companies. The new vessel underlines the company’s continued investment in future-oriented fisheries and reinforces VARD’s strong position in advanced fishing vessels for Norwegian owners.
Built for the future
Together with its owner Fincantieri Group, VARD combines local shipbuilding expertise, close customer collaboration and a global industrial platform to design and produce tailor-made, future-ready vessels that bring together advanced design, green technology and reliable project execution.
On board, Havbryn features an ice-strengthened hull, hybrid diesel-electric propulsion, Vard Electro’s SeaQ Energy Storage System, and an advanced H/G processing factory. Spacious cargo areas for refrigerated and frozen products, together with ensilage tanks for biomass processing ashore, are designed to maximize use of every catch.
Crew welfare has also been given high priority, with modern living quarters, architect-designed public spaces, day and mess rooms, a gym and cabins designed for comfort during demanding operations at sea delivered by Vard Interiors.
Seaonics has delivered a premium winch and crane package especially designed for safe and efficient deck handling in harsh conditions. During shooting or paying out wire all winches regenerate power back to the SeaQ Energy Storage System to reduce the power consumption in operation.
Havbryn is a strong VARD product and a vessel we are truly proud of. The design comes from Vard Design in Ålesund, with key deliveries from Vard Electro, Vard Interiors and Seaonics. Together with Havbryn AS, we have developed a future-oriented fishing vessel — and the project also creates important value for the Norwegian maritime supplier network.

Delivered on time
The hull was built at Vard Shipyards Romania – Braila, before final outfitting, commissioning, testing and delivery from Vard Brattvaag in Norway. The project is delivered on time and has brought together VARD’s integrated value chain, including design, electro, interior, piping- and deck-handling expertise.
