NYK orders offshore-vessels from PaxOcean
PaxOcean Group will build a new Service Operation Vessel (SOV) for Japanese shipping company NYK Line to support the offshore wind sector. The vessel will be constructed at the Graha shipyard in Batam, Indonesia, and is based on the Ulstein SX222 design.

The project follows a design agreement between PaxOcean and Ulstein Design & Solutions. The vessel will support offshore wind farm construction, operation and maintenance while also serving as accommodation and logistics support for offshore personnel.
The SOV will measure 89.6 metres in length and 19.2 metres in beam, with accommodation for up to 120 people. Delivery is scheduled for 2029.
According to PaxOcean, the project strengthens the group’s capabilities in specialised vessel construction and reflects growing demand from the offshore wind industry.
A key feature is Ulstein’s Twin-X-Stern concept, which allows efficient operation in both directions. The design reduces the need for frequent turning manoeuvres and is expected to improve manoeuvrability, station-keeping performance and energy efficiency.
The vessel is being prepared for future methanol fuel use and fully electric operation. It will receive dual classification from DNV and CR and sail under the Taiwanese flag.
Ulstein Design & Solutions is providing the vessel design and engineering package, while Ulstein Power & Control will supply an integrated DC-based hybrid energy and automation system linking power generation, energy storage, propulsion and control systems.
The project marks another step in PaxOcean’s expansion within the offshore wind vessel market, a segment expected to grow alongside the continued development of offshore renewable energy and the maritime energy transition.
