Christening of the corvette “Augsburg” at Blohm+Voss

The fourth of five new corvettes for the German Navy, the “Augsburg,” was christened today at the Blohm+Voss NVL site in Hamburg. It will now undergo final outfitting and be deployed for coastal operations, including reconnaissance and maritime target engagement in the North and Baltic Seas.
The ship will go through necessary functional checks and approvals with coordination from the Navy and public client’s specialist departments.
Eva Weber, Lord Mayor of Augsburg, emphasized the strong bond between the city and the Navy. “This partnership represents mutual respect and recognition for the important work of the corvette’s crew,” she said.
Sigrun Maxzin-Weigel, director of the Evangelical Children’s and Youth Welfare Center in Augsburg, cut the ship’s mooring line. Other dignitaries included Flotilla Admiral Andreas Czerwinski and Rear Admiral Christoph Joachim Müller-Meinhard.
Tim Wagner, CEO of NVL, highlighted the importance of modernizing naval forces in light of the security situation. He also noted the increase in workforce and investment in infrastructure, including the expansion of the Lemwerder site.
The five corvettes are under construction at Blohm+Voss, with the “Karlsruhe” christened last year. The K130 consortium, consisting of NVL, Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, and German Naval Yards Kiel, is building the ships.
