The battle for ambitious climate results
This week Danish Shipping will participate in Singapore Maritime Week along with Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs Morten Bødskov. The mission is to secure support for an ambitious climate agreement for global shipping, to be finalized
Shipowners from around the world, ministers, business organizations, and more will come together for the major international shipping conference, Singapore Maritime Week.
Representing the Danish government Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs Morten Bødskov will attend, and CEO of Danske Rederier Anne H. Steffensen is also in Singapore to advocate for Danish Shipping.
The main focus in the coming days is to secure as much support as possible for an ambitious agreement on climate regulation for global shipping, to be made in London in July.
The climate agreement itself will be negotiated at a meeting of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), but the effort to convince more people that a green future for global shipping is the only correct path is central in the coming days.
“I am incredibly pleased that Minister for Industry, Business and Financial AffairssMorten Bødskov is taking the time to attend this forum to advocate for Danish shipping. We stand shoulder to shoulder with the government in our desire for climate-neutral shipping without compensation by 2050. That is the big goal, and that is what we must convince the doubters of in the coming days,” says Anne H. Steffensen.
A global set of rules for ship emissions should set an ambitious goal, lay the foundation for the specific economic and technical tools that ensure we reach our goal, and also include a range of technical sub-agreements, including regulation of all types of greenhouse gases, not just CO2. There must be assurance that the green fuels chosen are truly green.
During the visit to Singapore, the minister will also have the opportunity to meet with a selection of Danish shipping companies, who have activities in Singapore.
“Singapore is our home away from home. Danish shipping has a strong connection to Singapore, and we have many members who have offices and employees here. A close relationship with the Singaporeans is of great value to our industry, and with our participation in Singapore Maritime Week, we are sending a very good signal from the Danish side,” says Anne H. Steffensen.
