Jesper Florin\, Head of Security and Resilience at DBI – the Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology\, will explore how resilience must be understood and implemented across the entire maritime value chain. \nTaking inspiration from real-world examples—particularly within port infrastructure—Jesper will examine how we can prepare for unexpected scenarios in an increasingly complex risk landscape. With a holistic view rooted in the evolving concept of resilience\, this talk highlights the maritime sector’s crucial role in ensuring the continuity of vital societal functions such as logistics and energy supply. \n19:15 – 19:30 Closure

SUMMARY:Retrofit for energy efficiency and decarbonisation
DESCRIPTION:The transition of the global fleet to lower greenhouse gas emissions is a significant challenge. \nBeyond the difficulties in securing the necessary new fuels\, shipping companies face complex and critical decisions within a short timeframe. They must determine the best way to adapt or renew their vessels. Since ships typically have a lifespan of 20–25 years\, the transition cannot rely solely on replacing vessels as older ones are phased out and scrapped. There will also be a need to retrofit part of the existing fleet. \nThe decision on whether retrofitting a ship is worthwhile is often based on the payback period. However\, including the climate accounting for the two options—retrofit or newbuild—can provide a different perspective. Retrofitting existing ships\, for example\, from diesel engines to run on gas or methanol\, has so far only been implemented to a limited extent. This is due to both the high costs and the technical challenges involved in the process. \nThis evening’s session will explore the retrofit of a ship from diesel to methanol operation\, featuring insights from both the shipping company and the engine manufacturer. \nYou will also be introduced to an innovative tool designed to help shipping companies evaluate the climate impact of retrofitting an existing vessel versus constructing a new one. We’ll discuss how this tool has been applied in real-world decision-making within a shipping company\, offering practical insights into its effectiveness. \nFinally\, we will delve into an empirical study examining the performance of energy efficiency technologies retrofitted on containerships\, providing valuable data and analysis on their impact on operational efficiency. \nPreliminary program \n17:00 – 17:05 Opening by organizers by Per Winther Christensen\, Danish Shipping \n\n17:05 – 18:00 Conversion of Maersk Halifax from conventional fuel to methanol \n\n\nThe planning and execution of the project – APM project team members \n\n\nThe challenges of the engine and fuel system conversion – MAN ES \n\n\n\n18:00 – 18:30 Break \n\n18:30 – 19:15 Evaluating the climate impact of retrofitting an existing vessel vs building a new vessel \n\n\nPresentation tool for retrofitting and newbuild vessel LCA impact – ReFLow \n\n\nPractical experience with using the tool – DFDS \n\n\n\n19:15 – 19:45 Study on the Performance of Energy Efficiency Technologies \n\n\nPresentation by MMMCZCS and Vessel Performance Solutions\, Kristian Bendix Nielsen \n\n\n\n19:45 – 20:00 Q&A and wrap-up by Morten Ladekarl\, Class NK
