Bye to PJ Diesel, hello to PJ Circular Engineering
46-year-old maritime service company PJ Diesel has changed its name. The reasoning goes towards less diesel and more circular vibes in the company name. That’s why PJ Diesel Engineering is now PJ Circular Engineering!
The word circular engineering is carefully chosen. Driven by their commitment to the circular economy and their slogan “Creating More by Using Less” in the maritime industry, it was a natural step to drop the word diesel from the official name. PJ Circular Engineering is a name that embodies their dedication to climate responsibility and remanufacturing for over 45 years.
“We pride ourselves on being the ones who introduced the concept of the circular economy into the shipping industry,” explains CEO Anne-Mette Elsborg.
“In that sense, it felt completely natural for us to reinforce this focus in our name. We still believe that we are the ones working most ambitiously to get the shipping industry to think circularly.”
Anne-Mette Elsborg leads a company that, as one of the few in the world, maintains a warehouse with several hundred refurbished turbochargers and 4-stroke components for the shipping industry. PJ Circular Engineering has built a business around a circular plug-and-play concept for used turbochargers. The turbochargers are delivered as a complete unit that can be replaced by the crew during navigation, thus avoiding costs for technicians. This has garnered the company customers among recycling-conscious shipping companies on nearly every continent.
Anne-Mette Elsborg points out that the company’s business model, doesn’t have much to do with diesel-powered propulsion.
“85% of our revenue is related to the recycling and maintenance of turbochargers. Regardless of the fuel, there will be one or more turbochargers associated with the combustion engine on a ship. Therefore, we believed that it would be more relevant to have a company name that doesn’t tie us to a specific fuel but reflects that we help our customers limit their resource consumption.”
Why Circular? They believe that remanufacturing is not just a practice, but the pillar of their identity. Their approach to remanufacturing, evident in their turbocharger, governor, and four-stroke exchange program, highlights their commitment to extending the life cycle of engine components.
Their Mission: The transition to PJ Circular Engineering marks more than a name change. It showcases their dedication to reducing the carbon footprint across the maritime supply chain. By focusing on green transition through remanufacturing, they aim to significantly minimize Scope 3 emissions for their customers, supporting them on their journey towards a more climate-friendly maritime future.
What Changes? Beyond the name, their business model has evolved to enhance their service delivery. Transitioning to a workshop-centric approach allows them to optimize overhaul times and minimize downtime for the customers while increasing efficiency.
Looking Ahead: As the maritime industry diversifies its energy sources, embracing methanol, hydrogen, LNG, and electricity, PJ Circular Engineering is prepared for this change. Their expertise now extends far beyond traditional fossil fuels, ready to support the industry’s shift towards alternative and greener energy forms.
